Hunting dog training

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Though some form of hunting is illegal throughout the world, other forms of hunting still exists and one of the popular hunting sport is bird hunting. If you want the bird hunting to be a memorable one then a hunting dog is a must for your hunting expedition.
Some dogs have effective hunting skills while some do not, but either way when it comes to having a proper hunting dog to be effective and obedient at the same time, hunting dog training is essential. The training itself is long and time consuming process , which by the end is worth all the effort as you will have a faithful and effective companion for your hunting  adventure. But before that you need to completely willing and dedicated to put in the time required

until you get the desired effect.
Hunting dog training starts from pup itself. The best bet would be in buying a pup from any hunting dog training facilities. Because most of those pups are already exposed to some form of hunting training and the most important aspect is those pups are usually breed from a good hunting dog lineage.
Formal hunting dog training is the next step. Remember the saying “you can’t teach an old dog a new trick”, this is true for hunting dog training too. It is very difficult to teach a grown up dog obedience required for the trail, without obedience the whole concept in hunting dog training is ruined, so focus the training on puppy, these will always be effective.
Formal training consist of gun sound training, command training, and whistle voice training and sign training. Though each is difficult, experts opine that half an hour of training when the dog is 1 year less and an hour of training daily when dog is over 1 year is all it takes to teach your dog the way of a hunter.

Gunshot training:
This is very important, in this training you train the dog to get used to the sound of rifle. Remember that all dogs are afraid of the sound of rifle, so without proper gunshots training you end up having a dog running everywhere because of fear when you fire your rifle.
Gunshot training can be started when the pup is over a year old, this can be done by taking your pup to the fields where you fire your rifle and reassure the frightened pup, and by continuously exposing the pup to gun fire makes the dog to be least afraid for gun shots.
Command and whistle voice training:
This training is the basis for having an obedient hunting dog. This training can be started when the pup is under 1 year. The voice commands for hunting dog is basically three commands- “Whoa”, “Come”, and “Heel”. Though you can teach the dog many other commands it is necessary for your dog to be well trained in thus three commands.
Whistle can be used instead of voice, whistle command is better than voice commands, because in the field your voice might not reach the dog.
Sign training:
You need to have a professional trainer to teach this as this training is bit complicated
You can also train your dogs in many professional hunting dog training facilities.

Housebreaking dogs

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Dogs have been man’s best friend from a long time, they have always been loyal, when they are around people tend to forget their loneliness, and just enjoy playing with them. Dogs have saved lives even at times risking its own life for the sake of its master, and they have been guarding your house from the day you bought them. Yes sir, dogs are the best pet any one could have.
Even with all this quality of the dog it is easy to get annoyed if your dog starts pooping inside the house, hitting the dog in anger only spoils the special bond between you and your pet, well then the trick is House breaking your dog in simpler words house train your dog.
Before we go any further let’s answer the basic question,
What is house breaking of the dog?
It is the single and most important training you want to give to your puppy or your older dog, training includes not pooping inside the house, but reliving himself in a proper place.
House break training should be done when you get the puppy home, training old dog is bit tuff, but with patience you can achieve it. You should always remember house breaking is a part of long training given to your dog, do not lose your temper if your dog does not start doing what you want it to do, this only creates fear in your dog rather than affection and love towards you.
The golden rules of house breaking are simple: Consistency with the training and rewarding there good behaviour. Remember dogs are very keen to please their master, they would do anything to get there masters attention, so when done properly house breaking is always successful
There are several methods to start house training the dog, starting with crate training is pretty simple and is very useful. Using a crate stimulates a den which the dog will always want to keep it clean; this promotes the dog not to relieve itself in the place where it sleeps, this can be used to make the dog understand that it should not relieve in the house.
Some of the easy tips which can be followed during house training.
•    At the starting of the training take your puppy out every 2 hours once so that it can relieve itself. Take the puppy out every time it eats , drinks and in the beginning even after it plays this will make the puppy realize that every time it wants to relieve itself it has to go out.
•    Start using a single place of elimination, and stick to that place when you take your puppy out.
•    When you see your puppy eliminating in place where it should not, it is better you clap a hand or call its name by a firm tone and pick it up to the place it should potty, saying verbal phrases like “here is your potty” in your language helps the dog understand that it is not appreciated when it relieves itself in improper places.
•    Offering a treat when the puppy potties at the right place, makes the dog feels it being appreciated and will associate treat with proper work.

Remember creating fear in the dog mind won’t help in house training of the dog, instead giving treats when it does a right thing and punishing when it does a wrong thing will help you to train the dog more quickly and efficiently.
